Top 10 Tips for Water Aerobics Beginners

  1. Look for an instructor that teaches different levels of water aerobics so that you can stick with the same teacher as you advance in skill.
  2. Invest in some well-made, fashionable chlorine resistant swimwear. That way, you’ll look great and you won’t have to worry about those harmful chlorine chemicals damaging your suit while you workout in the pool.
  3.  If you’re tall, check with the instructor first to make sure the pool is deep enough for you to practice the exercises in the water.
  4. In case of any emergencies, make sure the instructor you choose is certified in both CPR and First Aid.
  5. If your class is in an outdoor pool, don’t forget to apply waterproof sunscreen to avoid sunburn.
  6. Don’t forget to bring your bathing cap! Most pools require you to wear one while you’re in the water so that you don’t clog their drains and filters with stray hair. Even though it’s a requirement, you can still make it fun by choosing a brightly colored or printed swim cap.
  7. You may be required by your water aerobics instructor to wear water shoes in the pool. Make sure to purchase a shoe that provides proper support and coverage for your foot so that you don’t hurt your feet or joints while you work out.
  8. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated while you exercise.  Just because you are in a pool doesn’t not mean you are not sweating.
  9. Be sure to exercise your abdominal muscles during your workout. Doing so will help you burn more calories, strengthen your core and help prevent back injuries
  10. It can be tempting, mid-workout, to reduce the intensity by unnecessarily bending your arms or legs. Instead, try to keep your limbs straight when you can – you’ll get the most out of your workout that way.
